Using Delta Epsilon Chi in the
Classroom
In the classroom, competitive events are nothing more than experiential learning tools that energize students and make teaching fun.
"I have been using the Delta Epsilon Chi events in the classroom for years, including the Advertising Campaign event as the capstone project for my advertising class. It has the guidelines, evaluation criteria, and even an evaluation form. There is nothing else I need to do."

Why use these tools in your classes?
The competitive events provide an engaging learning activity for students, while allowing you to evaluate your students' ability to:
Apply what they learn in class
Analyze real-world situations
Problem-solve, think critically and make decisions
Communicate through interactive role-plays, presentations and written projects
Turnkey Activities
The events come complete with: Objective & Description
Learning Outcomes
Student Instructions
Judge Instructions
Evaluation Criteria & Evaluation Form
Flexibility
You can adjust the guidelines to best accomplish your classroom goals. Change the amount of time students have to prepare for role-plays, let them take case studies home to prepare their presentations, or change the number of pages allowed for a written project. The event samples, guidelines and evaluation form are teaching tool for you.
Use in Online Classes or on Virtual Campuses
With all of the event information available online, have your students find a professional from business and industry to evaluate their presentation. Instructors bring these people on campus all the time to interact with and judge their students' presentations-for online classes the students go to the judges to present, and ask them to email their evaluation and comments straight to you.
Recognition
No matter what type of class you are teaching, what event you use in class, or where you are teaching, every one of these teaching tools can lead to recognition. Recognition for your students' hard work, recognition of your teaching success, and recognition for your campus if your top students take their talents beyond the classroom and compete with some of the top students in their field of study.
Why use the Business Simulation role-plays in your classes?
While students who decide to compete in these events will also demonstrate what they learned in class through a multiple-choice exam, it's the role-play situations that will energize students as a class activity.
How to Use Role-Plays in Class
The biggest question is: "How can I possibly include role-plays in my class? I don't have enough time to listen to them all?"
Peer-to-Peer Evaluation
One of the best strategies for students to learn is to evaluate someone else's performance. Step-by-step guidelines are provided for using this learning strategy in class.
Why use the Case Study situations in your classes?
Using cases in the classroom is nothing new to you. Delta Epsilon Chi just provides EVERYTHING you need to evaluate the cases, plus some sample cases to use.
You can use additional cases from textbooks, situations you read in publications like the Wall Street Journal, or cases you have developed.
You can decide whether students work on the case by themselves or in teams.
These events also allow the use of presentation aids (from flipcharts to PowerPoint presentations), letting students develop and make more formal presentations.
You can choose evaluate their knowledge of a certain subject area (such as International Marketing), their presentation skills (in a Communications class), or both.
How to Use Case Studies in Class
Again, this isn't a new concept. Unlike the one-on-one role-plays, ideally case studies should be presented in front of a class. However, if this does not work within your timeframe, don't worry. Students can just present to one or more judges sitting at a table, with other presentations taking place nearby. The judges could be industry professionals OR class peers. With local professionals, handle it just like you would if you were teaching online-students find people to evaluate their presentations, with scores being emailed directly to you or brought back on paper by the students. Here's how it works for in-class peer-to-peer evaluations.
Why use the Prepared Business Presentations in your classes?
This is the #1 method for instructors using the events in the classroom. As with the other events, you get the complete package of instructions, evaluation forms, etc.
How to Use Prepared Business Presentations in Class
Instructors use them as capstone projects, either as the final or as an option to taking a final exam. The projects are extremely flexible, allowing students to choose the design they present (Design Presentation), the business they want to start (Entrepreneurship), the product or service they want to sell (Sales Representative) or the company they want to do an Advertising Campaign for.
All that you need to do is give your students the guidelines and the date when the project is to be turned in/presented. It is recommended that you also give them intermediate deadlines for turning in first their concept, then an outline.
Major or Area of Study
If you teach in a specific industry, such as Fashion design, the only instructions you need to add is to make sure their projects relate to your class (i.e., clothing, or even more specific, such as formalwear). You make the projects suit YOUR instructional needs.
Community Connection
Many instructors send their advertising students into the community to develop advertising campaigns for local small businesses who don't have the expertise or the budget to hire it out. A lot of these businesses are so thankful that they end up helping to fund the student's competition trips.
